Once the leaves turn amber and fall to the ground, as the frost starts setting in, we start to adorn our houses with twinkling lights. Glittering Christmas trees everywhere you look and presents crowding the space under the tree, families come together for a feast fit for kings and queens. One of the biggest Christian and cultural holidays of the year globally but what is the true meaning of Christmas? Is it the gifts? Is it the annual economic boost? For most, Christmas is a time for self-reflection and focussing on the foundations of what it means to be human. A time to give, share and spread the happiness that many of us may take for granted.
In May, the government reported that nearly 15,000 people across the country with nowhere safe to stay had been helped into emergency accommodation under the ‘Everyone In’ Programme. There is no national figure for exactly how many people are homeless across the UK but latest figures show that 4,751 people slept rough across England on any given night in 2017 and last year alone 57,890 households were accepted as homeless. Every year Crisis Christmas supports thousands of people who are homeless. The team goes out of its way to provide food, festive treats, emotional and wellbeing support. This Christmas, if you find yourself with a little extra cash to splash, then less than £30 will provide a person in need the following services:
This year EverythingCommunity got their hands on surplus branded goods from their sister company EverythingBranded and sent them over to the Crisis Christmas team. A selection of notebooks, speakers, power banks, reusable travel mugs and water bottles were sent over. The items will be used for various activities including everyone’s favourite bingo! Christmas is just the beginning, every small donation will also help the organisation all year round. They can provide support, training, and education so that struggling people are given the chance to leave homelessness behind for good.
